Meet our incredible Yoga teacher, Sue Kennedy.

Hi,

I’m Sue, a lifelong yogi, and I’d like to share a bit about my journey with yoga—from my first steps as a curious child to where I am today as an experienced teacher.

How It All Began

My journey with yoga began over 50 years ago when I was just 11 years old. I discovered a book called Richard Hittleman’s Yoga for Health, and it completely captivated me. I started practicing the yoga postures (Asanas) regularly, five times a week. Even at that young age, I felt drawn to the holistic nature of yoga. I even asked my mum to swap my breakfast for yogurt, honey, and half a banana instead of the usual cornflakes! Let’s just say, it wasn’t the most popular request back then.

Life Gets Busy

As I grew older, life got busier. By 15, I was working full-time as a hairdresser while apprenticing, which left little time for yoga. My practice took a backseat as I focused on building my career and navigating the demands of daily life.

Returning to Yoga

In 2015, after years of marathon running and teaching high-intensity fitness classes, a running injury forced me to slow down. It was then that I reconnected with yoga, along with Pilates, which I had practiced earlier. This was a turning point for me, and I decided to immerse myself fully in yoga once again.

I completed my yoga teacher training in 2016 and started teaching soon after. However, my early classes were more of a reflection of my background in high-intensity workouts—far from the gentle, mindful practice yoga is known for. I lacked the depth of knowledge in essential aspects like breathwork, alignment, and technique, but those early experiences fueled my desire to grow and improve.

A Journey of Learning and Growth

Over the years, my teaching style has evolved significantly. I’ve had the privilege of studying with some incredible international teachers like David Swenson, Petri Räisänen, Jonny Scott, and Manju Jois, as well as respected local teachers such as Adam Keen, Scott Johnson, Matt Ryan, Donna Southwell, and Joey Miles. These experiences have profoundly shaped my approach to yoga, and I continue to learn from these mentors.

Today, my teaching is centered on creating a personalized experience for each student. I believe there’s no “one size fits all” approach to yoga—every body is unique, and that requires thoughtful adaptation. My focus is on safe, effective practice that supports both longevity and overall well-being.
